How Curated Humanity handles the personal information readers give us through the contact, corrections and Weekly Dispatch forms on curatedhumanity.org.

Information you give us
Contact and correction messages: the email address you enter, your name and subject where you choose to add them, the page you reference and the text of your message. Weekly Dispatch sign-ups: your email address and a consent tick. The site also keeps short-lived anti-abuse counters described below, which are derived from the address and network address of a request.
Contact and correction messages
These are sent by email to the Curated Humanity editorial inbox by the site's hosting and email delivery provider, with your address set as the reply-to so the desk can answer. They are not written to a public database on this site. To slow down spam bursts, the server briefly counts recent submissions per address in memory; that counter is not a stored profile of you.
The Weekly Dispatch (recurring email)
Signing up creates a private record in the site's database, readable only by the site's own server code. It holds: your email address; a status of pending, confirmed or unsubscribed; the consent wording you agreed to and the date of your request; and SHA-256 hashes of the confirmation and unsubscribe tokens — the usable links themselves are not stored. Timestamps are kept for when the request was made, when a confirmation email was sent, when it was confirmed, and when you unsubscribed.
The stored consent statement reads: “Send me The Weekly Dispatch from Curated Humanity: one email a week with attributed Palestine news, context and culture. I can unsubscribe at any time.” The sign-up box on the page repeats the same terms and links back to this notice.
Confirmation is required before anything is treated as a subscription: the request is saved as pending, and only a click on the confirmation link changes it to confirmed. A pending or unconfirmed address is not enrolled in anything. To stop mail, use the unsubscribe link in any dispatch email or the unsubscribe page; to have the record removed outright, ask through the contact page.
Earlier “newsletter interest” submissions
Some readers previously submitted a launch-interest form. That form promised only a notice when a newsletter launched, and those submissions were emailed to the editorial inbox as launch notices; they were never added to the Weekly Dispatch database. No one is enrolled in the recurring dispatch automatically — a fresh opt-in with email confirmation is required.
Anti-abuse counters
Dispatch sign-ups are throttled with counters stored in the database, keyed by a SHA-256 hash of the email address and of the request's IP address. Each entry holds only the hash, a count and the start of its time window. A hash is still derived from personal data — this site does not claim otherwise — but it is kept solely to reject signup floods and is not used to identify or profile readers.
What is not switched on yet
The sender domain for site email is configured and still awaiting verification. Until it verifies, confirmation emails may fail to send and a sign-up simply stays saved as unconfirmed. The weekly dispatch email itself is not being sent at all: it would need a verified sender and a supported bulk newsletter service, and neither is connected. The public issue archive works regardless — it needs no email address, account or consent.
External links
This site links to third-party publishers and organisations, including World Central Kitchen. Once you follow an external link, that organisation's own privacy policy applies. Donations made externally are handled entirely by the receiving organisation; Curated Humanity does not collect or process payments.
Tracking
Our own pages load no advertising or analytics scripts and set no marketing or tracking cookies. There are no reader accounts and no paid gates.
Your choices
You can ask us to delete or correct any message, launch-interest submission or dispatch record linked to your address, and to stop any contact. Write to us through the contact page and say which address the request concerns; requests are carried out by hand by the editorial desk.
