The olive harvest: a season of work, family and access

Every autumn, olive picking in the West Bank brings together household income, family labour and a cultural calendar. UN records also document how access to groves shapes whether a harvest happens at all.

Tatreez as a family archive

Palestinian embroidery is learned at home and worn on everyday and ceremonial dress. Museums and UNESCO describe it as a record of place, occasion and generation — an archive kept in thread.

The classroom record: what UN data shows about Palestine refugee schooling

For three-quarters of a century, a UN agency has run one of the region's largest school systems for Palestine refugee children. Its own published figures show how that system was built — and what has happened to it in Gaza.

These are original explanatory features written by the editorial desk from published records. They are not field reporting: no interviews were conducted and no one is quoted. Commissioned reporting will be labelled as such when it exists.

Curated Humanity has not yet published commissioned field reporting. When it does, the work will be sourced, edited and labelled. This is what the desk is seeking and how proposals are handled.

Editorial priorities

01

Daily life

Reported work grounded in how people live, study, work, care, cook, create and maintain community.

02

Family and memory

Oral history, family archives and intergenerational accounts, published only with informed permission.

03

Place and belonging

Work attentive to a named place—its people, ecology, built environment and changing conditions.

04

Diaspora

Palestinian life beyond Palestine, without treating identity as a single experience or reducing it to politics alone.

Consent

People are not raw material

The intended use, risks, attribution and right to withdraw before publication must be understood by contributors.

Verification

Details are checked

Names, dates, locations, documents and quoted words require a traceable source. Uncertainty stays visible.

Safety

Minimise foreseeable harm

Identities may be withheld for a stated safety reason. Curated Humanity will never attempt to expose a protected identity.

Contributor guidelines

Contributor guidelines

  1. 01

    Pitch first

Send a short proposal: what happened or what you want to explain, where, who is involved, your relationship to the story and why now. Do not send finished drafts containing sensitive details.

  2. 02

    Show your sources

List the documents, recordings, data or publications that support each factual claim. Unsupported claims are cut or attributed, never smoothed over.

  3. 03

    Consent in writing

Anyone named, quoted or photographed must understand where the work will appear and may withdraw before publication. Children require guardian consent.

  4. 04

    Rights to images

Send only images you made or have written permission to license. Include the photographer's name, date and place. Generated images are never published as documentary photographs.

  5. 05

    Labels are fixed

Work is published as reporting, first person, analysis or opinion. The label is agreed before editing and shown to readers.

  6. 06

    Editing and corrections

Edits are shared with the contributor before publication. Published errors are corrected openly through the corrections process.

The contact form is delivered by ordinary email. It is not end-to-end encrypted and does not provide anonymity. If your safety depends on confidentiality, do not send identifying details in a first message.
